In 1914, Sam Braslau, the eldest of four sons of a Jewish Ukrainian miller saved enough money to go to America. He peddled clothing and used the money to send for his brothers, Morris, Frank and Abraham. Together, they sold clothing, shoes, cotton-picking sacks and household linens in a horse-drawn buggy, and eventually Braslau's Dry Goods on Leopard Street opened in 1925. Two years later they added furniture. Abraham ventured into a small bedding manufacturing business which eventually became Suniland Furniture. Sam left the business in 1948 to start his own business. By 1962 the Braslau Family had opened a second location and eventually a satellite store in Alice, Texas. Due to changing economic conditions and the city's south side growth, the Staples location underwent expansion in 1992 and in 2007 the Leopard Street store was closed.

The current location now boasts almost 70,000 square feet of display. Braslau's is one of a few furniture retailers that still services its own credit accounts, which just adds to our customers' level of comfort. Frank and Morris taught that hard work, integrity and fairness were the most important tools in business, and with customers you always go the extra mile without a second thought. These values still exist today through Irving Braslau, retired, and his son Blake, along with associates who are literally like an extended family.
