Naturopathy focuses on promoting health and treating disease through non-invasive techniques and natural therapies. The approach emphasizes prevention, self-healing processes, and the role of lifestyle and environmental factors in health and illness. It's a field that necessitates a strong grasp of both the basic and clinical sciences, similar to conventional medicine, as well as comprehensive knowledge of natural therapies.
The Association of Accredited Naturopathic Medical Colleges (AANMC) lists seven accredited naturopathic programs in North America. These programs prepare students for a career in naturopathic medicine through rigorous academic and clinical training. Naturopathic medical students spend their first two years on biomedical sciences, akin to their counterparts in allopathic and osteopathic programs. Despite its growth, naturopathy remains regulated in only certain areas. In the United States, 22 states, the District of Columbia, and the United States territories of Puerto Rico and the United States Virgin Islands have licensing laws for naturopathic doctors. In these states, naturopathic doctors are required to graduate from an accredited four-year naturopathic medical school and pass an extensive postdoctoral board examination to receive a license.
