FOCUS Homeschool - Alaska Home School Program

FOCUS Home school provides an elementary and secondary instructional model to students in Alaska, Anchorage, Fairbanks, Fort Wainwright, JBER, Wasilla, Palmer.

Chugach School District began a correspondence program in the 1980s to offer education for students residing in remote locations inside our district boundaries. At that time the advisory teacher traveled by boat, plane, and snowshoes to visit our families and provide support, materials, assessments, and encouragement.

When Cordova School District requested our help in providing educational support to homeschool families who resided out of their reach but within their boundaries, we formed a partnership with them. In 1997, the Alaska State Department of Education recognized the value of districts working together and the potential for districts to enroll homeschool students outside of their boundaries. Thus began our current model, from which thousands of Alaskan students benefit. It is a model that began in a spirit of cooperation and respect for home education, and as a way to meet the unique needs of Alaskan students. We now have homeschool staff support in Fairbanks, Anchorage, Girdwood, and Valdez and we serve students throughout Alaska.
