GDC Home
It all started in 1978. Jane Gregorie and two friends opened a 2,500 sq ft shop in Charleston, SC selling drapery and upholstery fabric "seconds". In 1992, Jane's son, Harry Gregorie, began his retail adventure and purchased the business and renamed it Gregorie, Douglas and Company, nicknamed GDC Home to reference to an oddly similar business his ancestor established in 1781 in Charleston. In the mid-1990s, Harry opened a second, much larger store in the town of Mt. Pleasant, SC. Today, that store has grown to over 25,000 sq ft. The increased floor space allowed GDC Home to diversify and add other complementary product lines, such as indoor and outdoor furniture, area rugs, lighting, and a wide array of accessories.
In 2004, the flagship Charleston store was relocated and now occupies a spacious two story 45,000 sq. ft. location in the suburb of West Ashley. Also at this location is an attached 25,000 sq. ft. warehouse that stores and distributes the large variety of goods that he, his wife Cathy, and a team of buyers collect on their many international and domestic buying trips. These trips take them as near as Georgia and as far as China, India, and Indonesia where they search for items that will excite and intrigue their customers. In 2006, Harry opened his third store. This 4,500 sq. ft. store specializes in interior design and is located at the crossroads of Kiawah and Seabrook Islands in Freshfields Village.
