Alcoholism is an addiction to alcohol, now called alcohol disorder. An estimated 17 million adults over the age of 18 have an alcohol disorder (AUD), and 1 in 10 children live at home with a parent with an alcohol problem. [1] Alcoholism occurs when you drink too much and your body eventually becomes addicted to or dependent on alcohol. Because of this alcoholism, you will continue to drink even if your alcohol consumption has negative consequences, such as losing your job or breaking relationships with loved ones. So, if your condition is serious, you may need to be treated for alcohol poisoning in a hospital. There will be a physical exam and questionnaire about your drinking habits for you to be diagnosed with alcoholism or alcohol use disorder. There is a chance also that your doctor may order blood work to check your liver function, and if you show signs or symptoms of liver disease. In fact, alcoholism can cause serious and lasting damage to your liver. Your liver is responsible for removing toxins from your blood. When you drink too much alcohol, your liver has a harder time filtering the other toxins from your bloodstream, and the alcohol itself.
