About Mike Counsil, Owner
Mike Counsil became a plumbing contractor in 1993 doing residential and commercial construction. In 1998 the decision was made to add residential service to the mix. At the time Mike did not have any experience in the service industry, and in fact, knew very little about the business. Mike went to several seminars to find out more about the business, and as a result chose to implement the Maio system as a result. He recognized that he was going to need a lot of help and made the decision to hire his wife Brenda away from her job with Camino Medical Group.
Together they rolled up their sleeves and began to put together a system for new business. Mike and Brenda were quite successful the first three years of running their new business. At the beginning of 2001, a car accident took the life of their youngest son, (who was also working for Mike Counsil Plumbing) and turned their life upside down. At that time, they hired a manager to run the business, and did not provide the necessary focus on the business to keep it successful. By the end of 2002, the business was in deep financial difficulty. Mike and Brenda stepped back in and through hard work and focus turned the business around. By 2007 all of the old debt was paid off and MCP was running with a small profit. Mike recognized that to improve they were going to need some additional outside help.
One of the main concerns was training. Mike started looking for training programs and was having difficulty finding what he felt was a good program. In February of 2010, Mike went to a profit day, and made the decision to join PSI. By implementing the PSI model, Mike Counsil Plumbing Inc. went from 2.3 million in sales and a 5% profit to over 5 million in residential sales with a 13% profitability. Mike has since added ESI (Jan. 2011) which is profitable and will do just over 1 million in sales for 2012. Mike just added Airtime 500 (Jan. 2012) and is looking to blend the model for HVAC with what he does with plumbing. Mike believes that in the future, all of the services will look similar to the Airtime 500 model. Mike is excited and wants to still be a part of the team to strategize, test, and implement some of the new ways of looking at the business's.
