When an aluminum anode has lost around half of its initial weight, it's time to replace it. The anodes do not last forever and must be examined and weighed on a regular basis to ensure that there is still enough meat to do the job. It goes without saying that if you try to loosen your anode and it breaks apart, you will need to replace it. Corrosion may not be visible on the anodes outside, but it might rust through the centre.

When two separate metals are electrically or physically coupled and then submerged in saltwater, the metal transforms into a battery. This battery now has some type of electrical current running through it. The electrons that formed this current are propelled by one of the metals that is releasing metal ions into the ocean water. This is known as galvanic corrosion, and if left uncontrolled, it easily destroys submerged metals.
