What Is the Difference Between Yoga, Pilates, and Stretching and Which One to Choose

You should choose the types of training depending on what goals you set for yourself. Once we explain what yoga, Pilates, and stretching are, we will figure out which direction will bring you more pleasure and help you achieve your goals faster. What are they and how are they different? Let's start with yoga, the roots of which go to the distant past.

Yoga Is for Health, Peace, and Harmony

Yoga is a set of spiritual, physical and mental practices with which you can cleanse karma and achieve enlightenment. Asana is a static posture which you maintain for a certain time, usually 30–60 seconds. Accurate asanas - with an elongated spine, no wrinkles in the neck, and a properly distributed load helps to get rid of some health problems and strengthen the body.

In everyday life, we use strictly defined muscle groups, while others rarely get involved in the daily activity and lose their tone. This is a problem not only for sedentary people but also for athletes who practice the same sport and who neglect stretching.

When you keep an unnatural body position for a long time, for example, when you sit at a computer, some muscles are tense all the time. Constant muscle tension in the wrong position affects the bones and provokes neck and back pain.

During the performance of asanas (provided that they are done correctly), strictly defined muscle groups are tightened, including those that are rarely used in everyday life. The rest of the muscles are not involved in a particular asana while relaxed, so you don’t spend energy on them.

In addition, some yoga poses affect the internal organs, stimulating their circulation and improving their performance. Breathing exercises also stimulate the function of the internal organs, help to relax and improve concentration.

Pilates Is for Strength and Flexibility

Unlike yoga with a centuries-old history, dozens of directions, meditations and spiritual practices, Pilates is simpler and more understandable to modern people. This combination of dynamic exercises for the strengthening of the whole body was developed in the 20th century by Joseph Pilates.

The main focus is on the development of the abdominal muscles. In addition, much attention is paid to stretching the spine during exercise. Together with the strengthening of the abdominal muscles, it allows you to get rid of violations of posture and fix the correct body position.

Breathing is also important, but, unlike yoga, there is no wide variety of breathing exercises. Pilates practice chest, or lateral breathing, which strengthens the intercostal muscles.

A similar feature of yoga and pilates - concentration in the process of training. During pilates, the athlete must concentrate on his body position, tension and muscle relaxation, and breathing. This feature, along with a smooth exercise, eliminates injuries during exercise.

Stretching Is for a Flexible Body and Injury Prevention

Stretching includes dynamic and static exercises aimed at increasing the elasticity of joints, muscles, and ligaments. This includes stretching to strengthen the spine, splits, and exercises to increase joint mobility.

At the same time, stretching does not have a specific sequence of movements, as in Pilates, and difficult to perform poses, as in yoga. If you want to stretch specific muscle groups before training, nothing prevents you from choosing four or five stretching exercises, and leave the rest to a hitch or not to do at all.

Also, in stretching, there is no special emphasis on breathing. During stretching, it is important not to hold your breath, to take smooth and deep breaths and exhalations. And one more difference between stretching and yoga and pilates is the presence of paired exercises when several participants stretch each other.
